Buying vs renting

Considering we could never afford to buy in our current neighbourhood (which we love), maybe we should keep renting... the key being to invest as much as possible of whatever is left over.

The point of the linked article is that the main argument for buying a house is that when you rent, you're "throwing your money away". However, as he shows, when you buy, you're also throwing A LOT of money away, in the form of taxes, insurance and INTEREST. Not to mention all those one-time fees when you buy. Basically, you shouldn't buy a home because you think it's an investment, you should buy when you're ready to settle down somewhere permanently (eep!).

There's an interesting calculator here that breaks down the cost of owning vs renting, per year.
