Creating the Self / Creating Yourself

According to George Bernard Shaw, “Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

I don’t know to what extent you can really “create” who you are. I think we are all a product of our education and experiences: education first by our parents, experiences through our upbringing, then education we choose through what we read and who we spend time with. I do agree, however, that we should have goals and a certain ideal in life that we aspire to be like (as I’ve written before). Maybe this is what he means by “creating yourself”.
