Go and have a life first

Prominent Canadians were asked what they learned before embarking on their careers in a May 2002 Globe and Mail article:

"When I told my English teacher I wanted to be a writer he said, 'That's all fine and good. But go and have a life first.' I'm glad I spent 10 years becoming an anthropologist. I lived in Africa and the Middle East, did a PhD at Oxford - had all these experiences that I can now draw upon in my writing."
