Musicals

Q: What is the one thing that Kim really enjoys but MB really hates*?
A: Musicals!

We watched the movie version of Nine last night. The movie is based on Fellini's semi-autobiographical film 8½ and stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren, Kate Hudson and Fergie.

Earlier this week, we went to our first NAC performance of the year (we subscribed again), a play called "Chante avec moi". It was a really interesting concept, where it starts out with just one guy up on stage who starts playing the keyboard, who is then joined by a "member of the audience" (we all figured out that she was an actress quickly enough, but it was well played) and then gradually about 50 other actors, who all join together to sing a really catchy, jingle-type song. MB immediately said the song made him think of Ravel's Bolero, a composition that is basically just one melody repeated over and over again, but more grandiose each time (with more instruments, etc.). It was neat to listen to the piece as soon as we got home (the Internet is wonderful) and note the similarities. However, although Bolero ends on a high note, the play then spiralled down into a parody of today's music industry (the way I saw it), complete with lip-synching and wardrobe malfunctions. It was a really powerful show.

I hope the rest of the season is as good!

*Ok, maybe hate is a bit of a strong word since he did, after all, sit through both shows with me...
