apocope : Mot féminin. L'apocope est l'abrègement d'un mot par la suppression des lettres finales. Elle s'oppose à l'aphérèse. Vélo est l'apocope de vélocipède. Autres exemples : auto(mobile), kilo(gramme), prof(esseur), moto(cyclette), sympa(thique), math(ématiques), pneu(matique), cinéma(tographe).
Aussi, on écrit par apocope grand'messe au lieu de grande messe, grand-mère au lieu de grande-mère. On trouve couramment des apocopes en littérature : Londre pour Londres, je voi pour je vois, encor pour encore, etc.
